Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged Israel to resume supplying electricity to Gaza, calling for the supply of “essentials” such as food and medical supplies to be protected from political manipulation. The request comes after Israel announced it would stop providing electricity to the Strip.
Carney stated that international law must be respected to promote sustainable peace and security in the Middle East. He called on both Israel and Hamas to work towards the return of hostages taken during the conflict, which began with a kidnapping on October 7.
The Canadian Prime Minister’s call for Israel to resume supplies comes after he was elected leader of the Liberal Party on Sunday, replacing Justin Trudeau. However, his stance on Israel has drawn criticism from Canada’s Jewish community, who are set to face him in national elections later this year.
