Canadian AI Startup Cohere Raises $500M, Valued at $6.8B

Canadian artificial intelligence (AI) startup Cohere has secured a funding round worth $500 million, valuing the company at $6.8 billion. The latest funding was led by Radical Ventures and Inovia Capital, with participation from existing investors such as AMD Ventures, Nvidia, PSP Investments, and Salesforce Ventures.

Unlike other prominent AI companies like OpenAI and Meta’s Llama, Cohere focuses on developing enterprise-specific AI models. This approach sets the company apart in a highly competitive industry where it seeks to expand its market share.

The new funding will enable Cohere to expand globally, explore different modalities, and further develop secure AI solutions for enterprises. The company has recently launched a command vision model and is building agentic AI that can help businesses and governments operate more efficiently.

To drive this growth, Cohere has appointed Joelle Pineau, former vice president of AI Research at Meta, as its chief AI officer, and Francois Chadwick, former executive at Uber and Shield AI, as its chief financial officer. The company will use the funding to advance its agentic AI research.

This significant investment in Cohere underscores the growing importance of enterprise-specific AI solutions in a rapidly evolving industry. As more companies explore the potential of AI, startups like Cohere are poised to play a key role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
