A man in northern Ontario has suffered serious injuries after leaping onto a polar bear that attacked his wife outside their home. The woman slipped and fell, prompting her husband to intervene, but the bear turned on him instead. Neighbour, who shot the bear with a firearm, stopped the attack and it died from its injuries shortly after.
Police were dispatched to the scene following reports of gunfire, and they ensured no other bears were roaming the area. Attacks by polar bears are rare, with 20 recorded deaths in Canada between 1870 and 2014. The World Wide Fund for Nature has described polar bears as a “threatened species” due to climate change-induced loss of sea ice.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning outside a home in the First Nations community of Fort Severn, Ontario. The couple had left their house before dawn to look for their dogs when they spotted the bear on their driveway.
