In response to President Trump’s new tariffs on Canada, multiple Canadian provinces have announced plans to remove American-made alcohol from store shelves. The tariffs, which include a 25% tax on Canadian goods and energy imports, took effect Tuesday.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has vowed to impose his own 25% tariffs on over $100 billion in US goods. At the provincial level, premiers have directed their liquor boards to stop selling American alcohol.
Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston announced that all US-made products will be removed from store shelves starting Tuesday, including beer, wine, spirits, and coolers. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said his province will no longer sell American-made booze, with the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) removing all US products from its catalogue.
British Columbia Premier David Eby directed the B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch to stop purchasing American liquor, while Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew announced that his province would also stop selling American products. Quebec Premier François Legault vowed to fight the tariffs and has asked the Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) to remove all US-made products from its shelves.
The move is seen as a response to Trump’s attack on Canadian goods, with premiers emphasizing the importance of supporting local industries.
