Canadians Cancel US Travel Amid Growing Tensions

Tensions between Canada and the US have led to a significant decline in Canadian tourists visiting the US. A recent cancellation of a $7,000 Airbnb reservation has left US hosts worried about future bookings. The situation worsened after outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau advised Canadians to reconsider travel to the US due to proposed tariffs by President Donald Trump.

According to a study by the Greater Palm Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau, 300,000 Canadians visited nearby Indio, California in 2017, spending around $236.5 million. However, with Trump’s recent comments and proposals for tariffs, many Canadians are canceling their trips to the US.

Business owners, including Airbnb hosts, are feeling the impact of these cancellations. Robert Carlson, a Palm Springs realtor, received an email from a Canadian friend canceling his booking at a $7,000 Airbnb property. Carlson is now worried that other bookings may be canceled due to increased tensions between the two countries.

The US Travel Association projects that a 10% decline in Canadian travel could result in $2.1 billion in lost tourism spending in the US. Canadians are also expressing their frustration with Trump’s comments about Canada, with some even planning to cancel annual trips to popular destinations like Cape Cod and Provincetown.
