Canadians Ditch US Flights Amid Trade War Fears

Canada’s love affair with US flights is cooling down, with bookings plummeting by over 70% amid the ongoing trade war. Airlines are slashing capacity on routes between the two countries, citing a sharp decline in demand. The trend suggests Canadians are opting for alternative destinations as fears of detention at the US border grow.

Data from aviation firm OAG shows that airline bookings from Canada to the US have collapsed by over 70% in every month since last year. Airlines have removed approximately 320,000 seats on routes between the two countries through October, with July and August seeing the biggest cuts. The decline is likely due to ongoing uncertainty surrounding the trade dispute.

Not all airlines are feeling the pinch equally, however. Air Canada, the country’s largest airline, says it has seen some booking shifts but not at the same volume as others. The airline has shifted capacity to adapt to the decline in demand and has downplayed the magnitude of the reduction.

Canada recently updated its guidance for citizens traveling to the US, reminding them of a new requirement to register with the U.S. government for stays longer than 30 days. As tensions between the two countries continue, Canadians are taking their business (and wallets) elsewhere.
