A recent report from the American Cancer Society reveals a concerning trend in cancer rates among younger adults. The study shows rising cancer rates, particularly among women under 50, including breast, uterine, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers.
While genetics and lifestyle factors play a role, researchers are now exploring the impact of environmental exposures on this troubling rise. The report also found that cancer mortality rates have declined by 34% from 1991 to 2022 in the United States.
Experts attribute the shift in cancer rates from men to women, with gaps between sexes and age groups narrowing greatly. This is partly due to simple lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, moderating alcohol intake, eating a nutrient-rich diet, staying tobacco-free, consuming fibre-rich foods, drinking less alcohol, wearing sunscreen, and engaging in regular physical activity.
These habits can significantly lower cancer risks. For instance, losing weight by adopting a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of 13 types of cancer, while quitting smoking can lower lung cancer risk by 30-50%. Eating fibre-rich foods can cut the risk of at least 13 types of cancer, and staying physically active can reduce the risk of several chronic diseases, including cancer.
Regular cancer screenings also play a vital role in cancer prevention. Early detection through screening can detect the disease in its early stages, often before symptoms appear, reducing cancer-related mortality and improving long-term survival rates.
