Cancer Research Group Urges Trump Administration to Restore Access to Data

The American Cancer Society has called on the Trump administration to restore access to comprehensive data, citing concerns that restrictions imposed by President Donald Trump’s executive orders have hindered cancer research and treatment.

The organization expressed deep concern over the sudden removal or alteration of government data sets and webpages from agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The CDC had removed its Social Vulnerability Index, which uses U.S. census data to identify county-level risk and vulnerability factors facing communities.

Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick, interim CEO of the American Cancer Society, warned that any restriction on gathering and releasing these data could hinder the organization’s ability to address and reduce cancer burdens across all communities.

The Trump administration has removed or altered webpages about HIV, LGBTQ+ people, and multiple other public health topics, including references to vaccines, health, and gender equity. Several data tools have also been removed or modified.

The American Cancer Society relies on data from federal and state agencies for its reports and publications, including the “Cancer Statistics, 2025” report and the companion “Cancer Facts and Figures” report. The organization is concerned that changes in data collection and dissemination could impact its research capabilities.

The issue comes as several medical nonprofit groups have filed lawsuits against the Trump administration over its removal of health information from government websites.
