Canine Comedians Shine in “The Two Gentlemen of Verona”

A unique collaboration between humans and dogs brings a new perspective to William Shakespeare’s classic play. In Eugene’s Free Shakespeare in the Park production of “The Two Gentlemen of Verona,” two golden retriever siblings, Brodie and Maisie, take on the role of Crab, the ill-behaved dog.

According to Sharon Selove, artistic director and founder of Free Shakespeare in the Park, Brodie and Maisie are natural performers who have stolen the show with their adorable antics and impressive acting skills. As scene partners, they bring a new level of realism to the play.

The canine duo’s performances have been praised for their visible differences, with Brodie generally calmer and Maisie jumpier and having better comedic timing. Their owners’ treats are an essential tool in maintaining their attention during performances.

Brodie, who is 4-½ years old and a certified Canine Good Citizen, is already making a name for himself as a stage dog due to his people skills. His sister Maisie has also gained fame, with audiences praising her comedic timing.

The final performances of “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” are this Saturday and Sunday at the Amazon Community Center in Eugene.
