Cannabis Use Linked to Higher Dementia Risk in Hospitalized Adults

A new study has found a significant association between cannabis use leading to hospitalization and an increased risk of dementia diagnosis. Research published in JAMA Neurology analyzed data from over six million individuals in Ontario, Canada, between 2008 and 2021. The study revealed that individuals who received acute care for cannabis-related issues were at a 23% greater risk of dementia within five years. Those hospitalized due to cannabis use faced a 72% higher risk of dementia. Lead researcher Dr. Daniel Myran noted that the association does not imply causation, but rather highlights a concerning connection between cannabis use and brain health risks. The study’s findings suggest that heavy cannabis use may contribute to negative impacts on memory and brain health.
