Cannabis Use Linked to Increased Heart Attack Risk

A recent study has found a link between cannabis use and an increased risk of heart attacks in healthy individuals under 50 years old. The American College of Cardiology released findings that suggest heavy cannabis users are more than six times as likely to experience a heart attack compared to non-users.

The research, which included over 4.6 million people, also found a higher risk of stroke, heart failure, and death from cardiac events among young cannabis users. However, the study did not identify exactly how marijuana affects heart health.

Experts suggest that cannabis may affect heart rhythm regulation, oxygen demand in the heart muscle, and blood vessel function, leading to increased cardiovascular risk. The researchers call for further studies to confirm their findings and identify high-risk groups.

The American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session will present these findings on March 29-31 in Chicago. The study was published in the journal JACC Advances and has sparked concerns about the potential health risks of cannabis use.
