Cannes Film Festival Hit by Sabotage and Power Outage

The Cannes Film Festival came to a halt on Saturday morning after a mass power outage hit southeastern France. The blackout affected about 160,000 households and disrupted nearby traffic and train service. Just hours earlier, a fire at an electrical substation weakened the area. Authorities suspect foul play and are investigating if arson attacks were involved.

The incident is believed to be connected to alleged arson attacks on Friday evening, which targeted a power plant in the Tanneron region. The festival organizers stated that screenings at one of their satellite venues were briefly suspended, but everything else proceeded as planned under normal conditions.

A main venue had switched to an independent power supply, and restoration efforts are underway. While authorities have not confirmed the cause of the power outage, right-wing politician Éric Ciotti has accused the incident of being a “deliberate, even terrorist, attack.”
