The Washington Capitals have signed forward Ryan Leonard to a three-year entry-level contract, senior vice president and general manager Chris Patrick announced today. The deal carries an average annual value of $950,000.
Leonard, 20, was selected by the Capitals with the eighth overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. He had a standout season with Boston College (NCAA), recording 49 points in 37 games and becoming the first NCAA player to achieve back-to-back 30-goal seasons since 2009-10. Leonard also led the nation in game-winning goals, ranking 10th in points.
As an amateur, Leonard was a dominant force, winning multiple awards including Hockey East Player of the Year and a Second Team All-American selection. He finished his collegiate career with 109 points in 78 games played.
Leonard represented the United States at several international tournaments, including three World Junior Championships (2023, 2024, and 2025), where he won gold medals twice and was named tournament MVP once. His impressive amateur career and international success have made him a top prospect for the Capitals.
