Behavioral ecologists have discovered a shocking phenomenon on Jicarón Island, where capuchin monkeys are kidnapping baby howler monkeys. The unusual behavior was observed in camera trap footage and has left researchers puzzled. Starting with one individual monkey, “Joker,” four subadult male capuchins abducted at least 11 baby howlers over several days.
The reasons behind the abductions remain unclear, but experts propose that boredom and a lack of predators on the island may be contributing factors. Younger individuals in the group are more likely to engage in cultural innovation, including tool use, which is unique to Jicarón’s capuchin population. The researchers suggest that this behavior might be an example of “over-imitation,” where animals imitate others’ actions without fully understanding them.
While the motivations behind the abductions are still unknown, some experts believe that the behavior may be a form of entertainment or social bonding for the capuchins.
