Emergency responders rushed to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor on Tuesday evening after a car plunged off a pier and sank. The driver was rescued but in critical condition, officials said.
The incident occurred in the 700 block of Eastern Avenue, near Piers 4 and 5. Firefighters from the Baltimore City Fire Department helped recover the vehicle with assistance from the police’s underwater dive team.
A bystander reported seeing a red Chevy sedan speeding before it “flew off the pier” into the water. The incident happened just as tourists were arriving at the area around 6 p.m.
This is not the first time a car has sunk in the Inner Harbor, with another incident occurring in July last year. A minivan was recovered from the harbor after being submerged for 22 feet behind the National Aquarium on Pier 4.
