Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa visited Gaza on Friday, bringing aid to victims of an Israeli strike on the Holy Family Church compound in Gaza City. Three people died and several were injured in the attack, which also damaged the church.
The cardinal questioned Israel’s explanation that the strike was a “stray ammunition” mistake. He expressed doubts about the claim, saying the Catholic presence would remain in Gaza “whatever happens.” Pizzaballa stated that Israel’s references to an investigation and promises of protection for civilians can be reassuring only if they lead to concrete actions.
The Vatican’s editorial director, Andrea Tornielli, criticized Israel’s response, saying it contradicts the images of destroyed mosques and churches. He noted that there has been no progress in investigating the killing of two Christian women shot by a sniper in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed “stray ammunition” for the church strike and expressed regret to Pope Leo, who called for an end to the war and protection of civilians and holy sites. The pope renewed his appeals and voiced concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Pizzaballa was accompanied by Theophilos III, the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, as they brought aid, including food supplies, first aid kits, and medical equipment. Their mission aimed to support Gaza’s small Christian community and families affected by the attack.
The pope has expressed love and affection for the Gaza parish community and reiterated his intention to stop the unnecessary slaughter of innocents.
