The Holy See Press Office released a declaration from the Cardinals gathered in General Congregation on Wednesday, stating that all eligible Cardinal electors have the right to vote in the upcoming conclave. The declaration clarifies that, despite the apostolic constitution Universi Dominici Gregis allowing only 120 Cardinals to participate, those over 80 years old created by Pope Francis have acquired the right to elect the new Pope.
Cardinals note that paragraph 36 of the same constitution grants this right to those exceeding the set limit. The declaration also expresses appreciation for Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu’s decision not to participate in the conclave, citing his desire to maintain the communion and serenity of the process.
Additionally, the Cardinals hope that competent juridical bodies will investigate the corruption case against Cardinal Becciu.
