Cargo Ship Collides with Military Jet Fuel Tanker in North Sea

A cargo ship collided with a tanker carrying jet fuel for the US military off eastern England on Monday, sparking two fires and releasing fuel into the North Sea. All 37 crew members on board were safe, but one is hospitalized. The collision triggered a major rescue operation involving lifeboats, coast guard aircraft, and commercial vessels. An investigation by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch is underway to determine the cause of the spill.

The US-flagged tanker MV Stena Immaculate was sailing from Greece when it hit the side of the Portugal-flagged container ship Solong, which was headed to Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The collision triggered multiple explosions and a fire on the tanker, releasing jet fuel into the sea. Crowley, the shipping company operating the Stena Immaculate, said all 23 crew members on board were safe.

The incident has raised concerns about the potential ecological impact of the spill. Greenpeace UK said it was too early to assess the extent of any environmental damage, but scientists believe that jet fuel disintegrates more quickly than crude oil and may be less damaging to the aquatic environment.
