Carlo Ancelotti Explains Jude Bellingham Substitution and Defense Fixes

Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti recently explained his decision to bring off midfielder Jude Bellingham during their 5-1 Champions League win over RB Salzburg. Ancelotti cited improved defensive play as the reason for the substitution and highlighted the quality of their front line, which he described as “incredible.” He acknowledged that defense was a collective issue but emphasized that fixing it would be crucial moving forward.

Bellingham, who had already made two assists in the first half, was rested to allow his teammates like Kylian Mbappé and Rodrygo to stay fresh. Ancelotti revealed that Bellingham had a minor back injury, noting there was nothing particularly concerning about it. However, the substitution raised questions among Madrid fans regarding their tactical approach ahead of their La Liga match against Real Valladolid on Saturday.

Madrid is currently two points clear at the Spanish top flight but may trail Atletico Madrid by one point if they lose their upcoming match against Villarreal. Ancelotti also hinted that facing Manchester City early in the Champions League could be beneficial, stating it would be “good news” to get them out of the way.

The Real Madrid coach further clarified that his comments about moving City aside were related to the competition for the Champions League title, which he considers one of their key objectives this season. However, achieving this seems unlikely unless Manchester City’s fortunes can be turned drastically under Pep Guardiola, Ancelotti suggested.

This explanation provides clarity on Ancelotti’s tactical decisions and his overall approach to the competition while maintaining focus on Madrid’s current standing in both the league and the Champions League race.
