Carnival Brings Big Business to Communities Worldwide

Carnival is a massive cultural phenomenon that brings in significant revenue for communities around the world. The Rio de Janeiro Carnival in Brazil, for example, attracts 7 million people and generates nearly $870 million in revenue each year. The festivities include colorful parades through the Sambadrome and street parties, with vendors selling festive accessories to enthusiastic customers.

In the US, New Orleans celebrates its own version of Carnival, known as Mardi Gras, which supports creative industries, cultural businesses, and thousands of small local enterprises. A recent study found that the total “direct and indirect impact” of Mardi Gras on the city’s economy was $891 million in 2023.

German Carnival is one of the longest and most profitable in the world, with an estimated $2.08 billion in revenue for the 2024/2025 season. The festivities include hundreds of local sessions, parades, and performances, which culminate in major street events on Ash Wednesday. Restaurants and pubs are among the biggest beneficiaries, with nearly €925 million in revenue.

Carnival is more than just a money-maker; it’s an essential part of culture and social cohesion for many communities. As Cologne’s Mayor Henriette Reker said, “For us locals, Carnival isn’t just an event – it’s an essential part of our way of life.” The tradition brings unity and optimism in times of uncertainty, making its economic impact even more significant.
