A guest’s concern about shark attacks while swimming at Carnival Cruise Line’s new private island destination, Celebration Key, has been addressed by Brand Ambassador John Heald and data. However, some guests may still be nervous, and that’s okay. There are plenty of alternative activities available that don’t involve swimming in the ocean.
Celebration Key, located on the southern coast of Grand Bahama Island in the Bahamas, officially opened on July 19, 2025. The destination is part of a region known for its shark population, particularly around Tiger Beach. Nevertheless, shark attacks are extremely rare and have only been reported about 34 times since 1580.
To alleviate concerns, Heald confirmed that there are no reported shark sightings or incidents at Celebration Key. In fact, some guests who visited the island earlier in July had a positive experience swimming in the ocean with no issues.
For those still worried, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy at Celebration Key. The destination offers two large freshwater pools, including Starfish Lagoon and Calypso Lagoon, which provide a shark-free environment for family-friendly fun and relaxation. Alternatively, guests can rent kayaks or jet skis, allowing them to stay afloat while still experiencing the island’s thrills.
Carnival will also be offering a “glass bottom boat & shark experience” at Celebration Key, where guests can observe sharks in their natural habitat from the safety of a glass-bottomed boat. This excursion is available as part of a shore excursion and costs $79.99 per adult and $69.99 per child.
In preparation for Discovery Channel’s annual “Shark Week,” which begins on July 20, 2025, it’s essential to separate fact from fiction. While sharks are present in the area, shark attacks are extremely rare, and most sharks do not perceive humans as prey. By taking a few simple precautions and choosing alternative activities, Carnival guests can enjoy their time at Celebration Key with peace of mind.
