Cat Deaths Linked to Bird Flu in Raw Turkey Pet Food

A warning has been issued to pet owners on the West Coast after a house cat in Oregon died from bird flu. The Oregon Department of Agriculture confirmed that the cat, which spent most of its time indoors, contracted the virus by eating raw turkey from Northwest Naturals. The company has since recalled its product.

Similar cases have been reported in California, where four cats have died after contracting H5N1 through recalled raw milk. Three potential cases are currently under investigation. This comes as the Los Angeles County Public Health Department recorded its first case of H5N1 in a human with mild symptoms who is recovering at home. The department believes the virus poses a low overall risk to the public, but it does not show evidence of person-to-person transmission.
