A house cat in Washington County, Oregon, died after contracting bird flu due to eating contaminated raw pet food. The Oregon Department of Agriculture issued an alert about Morasch Meats’ voluntary recall of Northwest Naturals’ two-pound feline turkey recipe.
According to Dr. Ryan Scholz, the state veterinarian, the cat’s death is linked to the virus from the raw pet food, as genetic testing showed a match between the virus and the infected cat. The recalled product has an H5N1 strain of avian influenza virus.
State officials are monitoring household members for potential flu symptoms, but no human cases have been reported. Pet owners are advised to check their supplies and dispose of the contaminated food.
