A pet food company has issued a voluntary recall due to contamination from the bird flu virus. Northwest Naturals, an Oregon-based company, recalled its Turkey Recipe raw and frozen cat food after it tested positive for the H5N1 strain of avian influenza.
The affected product was sold nationwide in the US and Canada, with “Best if used by” dates of May 21, 2026, to June 23, 2026. The company urges customers to discard the product immediately and contact their place of purchase for a refund.
According to state officials, a cat in Washington County, Oregon, died after consuming the contaminated food. Testing confirmed that the cat contracted H5N1 by eating the pet food. Local health authorities are monitoring individuals who had contact with the cat for flu symptoms.
The US Department of Agriculture and the Oregon Health Authority are investigating the outbreak. The FDA notes that cats are particularly susceptible to bird flu, although human cases are rare. This incident is part of a growing number of confirmed bird flu cases in humans this year, with California reporting 36 cases.
