A company in Washington State has voluntarily recalled its frozen raw pet food for cats due to potential contamination with bird flu. At least two domestic indoor cats in two counties tested positive for the virus after consuming the product, and one cat had died as a result. The recall affects 16 oz. and 24 oz. sizes of the Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula, which may have been contaminated with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1, also known as bird flu.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued the recall after reports of pets showing symptoms consistent with bird flu, including fever, lethargy, and redness in the eyes. Consumers who fed their pets the recalled product are advised to monitor for these symptoms and contact their veterinarian if they occur.
Wild Coast Raw, the company behind the product, said the recall was a precautionary measure and expressed condolences to the owner of the deceased cat. The Washington State Department of Agriculture is working with Wild Coast Raw to identify the source of contamination.
