Game developer SuperAuthenti has clarified that its recent virtual pet simulator game, Catly, did not use generative AI technology in its trailer or gameplay. The company released a statement to IGN, saying they are “very surprised” by allegations and claim no existing AI tools can produce the level of video quality seen in the trailer.
The developer showed IGNSelected footage from The Game Awards trailer, which includes in-progress shots intercut with final footage, appearing to confirm that the trailer was not generated using AI. They also denied claims that Catly is a blockchain game or involves non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
SuperAuthenti confirmed that Catly is being developed using Unreal Engine 5 and various software for hyperrealistic fur and hair effects.
The controversy surrounding generative AI in game development has been ongoing, with other companies like Activision and EA highlighting the technology’s role. However, the exact extent of its use remains unclear, making it challenging to distinguish between AI-generated and human-crafted work. Catly’s developer will likely address these questions further when the game is released in 2025.
