A recent outbreak in Oregon has linked raw pet food to bird flu infections in cats. According to the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) and Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA), Wild Coast LLC’s raw pet food formula containing chicken was identified as the source.
The issue started in early February, with dozens of cat deaths reported across multiple states. Tests confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI or H5N1) in affected cats. The WSDA has issued a public health alert warning pet owners about the contaminated product, specifically Wild Coast Raw Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula with lot numbers 22660 and 22664.
Symptoms reported by infected cats include fever, lethargy, low appetite, and difficulty breathing. If your cat has consumed this affected raw pet food, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Bird flu infections can also affect humans, but current health risks are considered low. Pet owners are advised to monitor themselves for symptoms such as eye redness, cough, or sneezing if they have been exposed to the virus.
