A recent outbreak of avian influenza among cats in the Portland area has been linked to a contaminated brand of raw pet food, according to the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA). Two cats from separate homes died after eating the same batch of Wild Coast Raw’s “Free Range Chicken Formula” with lot numbers 22660 and 22664. The contaminated batches were dated “best by: December 2025.”
The ODA has issued guidelines for pet owners to prevent their pets from getting infected, including avoiding undercooked or raw meat, unpasteurized milk, and feeding pets wild birds or animals. Owners are also advised to wash their hands after interacting with these foods and consider changing clothing and shoes before handling their pets.
Christine Knopp, a local cat owner, recently lost two of her 11 cats to bird flu, including one that tested positive for the virus. She has set up an online fundraiser to help cover veterinary expenses and aims to raise awareness among pet owners about the signs and symptoms of bird flu in cats.
