CBS Wins Temporary Restraining Order on “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” Distribution

Sony Pictures has taken steps to terminate its distribution agreements with CBS over the game shows “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune.” However, a Los Angeles court granted CBS a temporary restraining order against Sony’s move. The decision comes after Sony alleged that CBS had failed to meet licensing obligations and withheld certain license fees.

Sony inherited the shows when it acquired Merv Griffin Enterprises in 1994. The agreement was originally made with King World, which was bought by CBS in 1999. Now, Sony claims that CBS has been refusing a nine-figure buyout offer and is trying to void their distribution agreements.

CBS argued that Sony’s move would disrupt pending negotiations in 70 markets and cause irreparable harm, including significant loss of revenue. However, the judge granted the restraining order after considering both sides’ arguments.

Both companies have issued statements on the latest development. Sony stated that it has lawfully terminated its agreements with CBS due to the network’s failure to meet contractual obligations. Meanwhile, CBS is pleased with the court’s decision and will continue distributing the shows as usual. The cases remain pending, but the temporary restraining order ensures a pause in the dispute until further notice.
