CD Projekt Taps “Scrappy Energy” of Witcher 3 for New Game’s Success

CD Projekt, the developer behind The Witcher series, is aiming to recreate the success of its 2015 hit game, The Witcher 3. According to narrative director Philipp Weber, the studio wants to harness the same “scrappy energy” that drove the team to produce a critically acclaimed and commercially successful game.

During the development of The Witcher 3, Weber notes that the team experienced “good creative chaos,” where developers worked in a “vibe-based” manner, often taking on tasks outside their job remit. This approach resulted in a game that sold over 60 million copies and became one of the top 10 best-selling video games of all time.

For The Witcher 4, CD Projekt aims to retain this creative freedom while also introducing new elements to the story. The game focuses on Ciri’s narrative, which has sparked debate among fans. However, Geralt’s voice actor has defended the game against critics who label it “woke.”

The studio is working on other projects in development, including Cyberpunk 2 and a remake of the original Witcher. Despite not having an official release date yet, The Witcher 4 is expected to launch no earlier than 2027.

Weber emphasizes the importance of striking a balance between moving forward and experimenting with new ideas. By embracing this “healthy mix,” CD Projekt hopes to create a game that feels like a true sequel while still honoring the franchise’s story history.
