CDC Assists Texas in Measles Outbreak Response Efforts

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is providing close support to Texas authorities as they respond to a measles outbreak in West Texas, following the death of a child. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is offering technical assistance, laboratory testing, vaccines, and medication to help combat the outbreak.

The global spread of measles, particularly in Asia, increases the risk of cases among unvaccinated travelers returning to the US. In recent months, cases have been reported in various countries, including California. Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent measles infection.

HHS Secretary Kennedy has directly communicated with Governor Abbott and other public health officials to express the department’s commitment to supporting local efforts in managing the outbreak. While there is no specific antiviral treatment for measles, supportive care such as vitamin A administration can be provided under medical direction.
