CDC Silenced Amid Infectious Disease Surge

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is failing to communicate with the public about growing infectious diseases. Despite a surge in cases of measles, salmonella, listeria, and other illnesses, the agency’s website has not been updated in over a month.

Public health experts warn that the CDC’s lack of communication puts people’s lives at risk. “Public health functions best when its experts are allowed to communicate their work in real time,” said Kevin Griffis, former director of communications at the CDC. “This could have serious consequences.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has not ended, and new emergencies have emerged, including cases of hepatitis A and C. Meanwhile, chronic diseases like diabetes and breast cancer continue to affect over 100 million Americans.

CDC workers express their concerns about being silenced. “We feel like our hands are tied behind our backs,” said a current CDC employee. The agency’s silence may be attributed to the CDC’s current communications policies, which restrict employees from speaking out about issues with the organization.
