A new report from the CDC has identified a significant risk of blastomycosis outbreaks at industrial workplaces, particularly in areas with high fungal spore presence. The outbreak occurred at a Michigan paper mill, resulting in one death and infecting 162 workers between November 2022 and May 2023.
Blastomycosis is a rare infectious disease caused by inhaling fungal spores from the environment. Workers in industries that regularly work outdoors, especially in areas with moist soil or decaying wood, are at risk of exposure. The CDC has found that unfiltered ventilation systems and open doors can allow spores to enter buildings.
The investigation into the paper mill outbreak revealed no specific environmental factors led to the exposure. However, experts warn that industries with outdoor workers should consider providing worker training and education to enhance awareness of blastomycosis.
The report highlights the need for public health interventions and quick detection of work-related exposures to prevent future outbreaks. Healthcare providers and authorities are urged to consider these risks and take proactive measures to protect workers in high-risk industries.
