Celestial Events in August 2025 to Shine Bright

This August, get ready to witness a trio of celestial events that will dazzle across the sky. The year is set to feature 12 full Moons, plenty of meteor showers, four eclipses, and three Supermoons.

The Full Sturgeon Moon will be visible on Friday, Aug. 9, with peak illumination at 3:55 a.m. EDT. Named after the large freshwater sturgeon fish that were most easily caught during this time in waterways across North America, it’s a historical nod to Native American and colonial traditions.

Later, early risers can witness the planetary conjunction of Jupiter and Venus on Tuesday, Aug. 12. This rare event will appear as two bright planets close together in the predawn sky. The best viewing time is after 4 a.m. EST, with or without binoculars or a telescope.

The real showstopper, however, is the Perseid meteor shower peaking on Aug. 11-12. Originating from debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, this spectacular event can produce up to 100 meteors per hour. The display can begin as early as 10 p.m. and extend into pre-dawn hours, making it a breathtaking sight for North American stargazers.

Note that there won’t be a Blue Moon in August 2025 due to only 12 full Moons on the calendar this year. The next Blue Moon is expected to occur in May 2026.
