A 60-year-old teacher in central California has died from bat-transmitted rabies, prompting public health officials to warn about the dangers of bats. Leah Seneng found a bat in her classroom in October and tried to remove it, but it bit her. Despite not showing immediate symptoms, she fell ill weeks later and was hospitalized, where she succumbed to the disease.
The Dos Palos-Oro Loma Joint Unified School District has confirmed that Seneng’s death is related to rabies exposure from a bat bite. Public health officials are urging caution in areas with known bat populations, particularly on school grounds. The district will continue to educate its community about the risks of interacting with wild animals.
