CFP Semifinals and National Championship Announced for 2024-25 Season

The 11th year of the College Football Playoff (CFP) era marks a significant change with the introduction of a 12-team format for the upcoming 2024-25 season. The first round will take place on December 20-21, followed by quarterfinals on December 31-January 1, semifinals from January 9-10, and finally the CFP National Championship Game on January 20.

The schedule includes six games across three days, with ABC/ESPN handling Friday’s doubleheader, while TNT will broadcast Saturday’s early game. The quarterfinal round features four matchups at various locations, including the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl, and Sugar Bowl, all set to air on ESPN.

The semifinals will pit two teams against each other at the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl, both airing on ESPN. The final stage is the CFP National Championship Game, which will be held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, with a 7:30 p.m. Eastern time slot scheduled for Monday, January 20.

Michigan’s perfect season came to an end as they defeated Washington 34-13 in last year’s championship game, earning their first title since 1997. The Wolverines’ offense and defense were instrumental in securing the win, with quarterback J.J. McCarthy and running back Blake Corum standing out individually. Coach Jim Harbaugh collected his first national championship, marking a milestone for the Michigan program.

The expansion to 12 teams for the upcoming season caps off a decade of growth for the College Football Playoff.
