The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) employed around 1,600 people in fiscal year 2023. The National Treasury Employees Union has filed two lawsuits against Vought, the bureau’s parent company, alleging misconduct.
One lawsuit claims that three CFPB employees were given unauthorized access to internal systems after being granted access by Vought’s directive. Another suit alleges that Vought’s actions reflect an attempt to thwart Congress’s creation of the CFPB, which aims to protect American consumers.
The lawsuits come as the CFPB website and social media page are inaccessible. The bureau was previously targeted by Trump’s Project 2025, but it also champions efforts to stop banks from de-banking Americans, a focus of early Republican legislative efforts.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is accused of allowing access to confidential data with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), despite its lack of institutional authority. The CFPB’s actions reflect the drastic gutting of the federal bureaucracy by President Trump’s administration.
