A tragic incident occurred in the Channel off northern France on Sunday, claiming the lives of at least three migrants who attempted to cross from France to the UK. Around 50 people were involved in the attempt, with a small boat heading for southern England.
Rescue efforts resulted in the recovery of 45 people, mostly treated for hypothermia, while three more were confirmed dead after being found unconscious. A search operation continued for other possible victims.
This incident is part of a growing trend of migrants dying in Channel attempts this year. The British government has prioritized cracking down on human smuggling gangs to tackle the issue.
“It’s heartbreaking that lives have been lost at sea due to ruthless criminals,” said Angela Eagle, British minister for border security and asylum. “The UK will continue to support French authorities in their response to this incident.”
In November, nearly 30,000 people arrived in Britain by small boats in the year ending September 2024, with over 1,500 arrivals since Christmas.
