More than 1,100 migrants crossed the English Channel on Saturday, marking the highest number recorded on a single day so far this year. The latest Home Office figures show that 18 small boats arrived with 1,194 people on board, bringing the annual total to 14,811.
Defence Secretary John Healey described the scenes as “shocking” and said Britain had lost control of its borders over the past five years. He called for French authorities to change their tactics in intercepting smugglers and stopping migrants at sea.
The UK government has vowed to take down people-smuggling gangs and dismantle their business models. Home Office spokespersons stated that the threat posed by small boat crossings is a major concern, with thousands of lives at risk every year.
This crisis highlights the need for effective cooperation between governments and law enforcement agencies to address the root causes of migration and prevent further loss of life.
