Chargers QB Justin Herbert Suffers Ankle Injury

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert suffered a sprained left ankle during the team’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Herbert sat out practice Wednesday due to the injury, as well as a thigh contusion he also sustained against the Chiefs.

The ankle sprain occurred on the opening drive of the game, when Herbert was tackled by defensive end Mike Danna and limped off the field. Herbert had previously suffered a similar high right ankle sprain in Week 2, which kept him hobbled for several games before he fully recovered.

Herbert downplayed the severity of the new injury, saying it’s “probably not as severe” as his previous one. However, he admitted to feeling pain and limited mobility during the game.

In addition to the ankle sprain, Herbert also suffered a thigh contusion in the second quarter. The injury occurred when he leaped for a throw downfield and was hit by linebacker Nick Bolton’s elbow.

Despite missing practice Wednesday, Herbert finished the game without any apparent restrictions. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh said Herbert should rest and have his injuries addressed by the athletic training staff. However, Herbert opted to work with the medical team instead, citing his desire to ensure everyone was getting a full-speed rep.

The ankle injury is the latest in a series of health issues for Herbert this season, which includes missing two weeks of training camp due to a plantar fascia injury and navigating a high right ankle sprain.
