The Charity Commission has cleared Prince Harry of racism allegations but criticized him and the charity’s chair, Dr. Sophie Chandauka, for allowing a public dispute to “play out” despite not finding evidence of wrongdoing. The commission found that the row was fueled by misunderstandings and miscommunication among the charity’s trustees.
In a compliance case involving Sentebale, Prince Harry’s African charity, the regulator stated that the charity’s problems played out in the public eye, damaging its reputation and risking trust in charities more generally. It also acknowledged that a serious dispute arose due to disagreements over a new fundraising strategy but said there was no evidence of widespread or systemic bullying or harassment.
The commission issued a Regulatory Action Plan for Sentebale to make improvements and rectify mismanagement. Prince Harry’s spokesperson claimed the report fell “troublingly short” in addressing the consequences of Chandauka’s actions, which could impact the charity’s beneficiaries.
Chandauka expressed relief that the report found no evidence of wrongdoing against her but criticized the media campaign launched by those who resigned from the charity. She said Sentebale has emerged stronger and more focused after surviving the turbulence, with its vision of helping vulnerable children intact.
