US Governor Spencer Cox says suspect Tyler Robinson is not co-operating with authorities and has not confessed to shooting dead 31-year-old right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, who was killed in Orem, Utah. Robinson, 22, was taken into custody over 33 hours after the shooting.
Cox told US media that people around Robinson had been co-operating with the investigation. The governor reiterated concerns about social media and its role in the aftermath of the shooting.
Robinson was arrested on Thursday night after surrendering to police. He is currently being held without bail at Utah County Jail.
Governor Cox also confirmed that Robinson’s roommate, who is his partner, had been co-operating with authorities. The partner did not have any knowledge about the alleged shooting and has been working with investigators “right now”.
The investigation into Kirk’s death continues, with authorities interviewing everyone who knows Robinson to try to learn more about the motive behind the crime.
Cox previously called for unity in an effort to ease political tensions following Kirk’s death. He has also made repeated comments criticizing social media, calling it a “cancer” and advocating for better efforts to hold platform owners accountable.
A memorial service will be held on September 21 at Arizona’s State Farm Stadium, where Kirk lived with his wife and two children.
