Charlie McAvoy Out Indefinitely Due to Procedure

US Defenseman Charlie McAvoy Will Miss Multiple Weeks Due to Infection After Undergoing Procedure, Team USA Faces Uncertainty

US defensemen Charlie McAvoy will miss multiple weeks due to a procedure to clear an infection in his body. The 27-year-old was hospitalized on Monday night after developing severe pain from the infection, which stemmed from a minor “upper-body” injury. To stabilize the infection and stop its spread, he underwent surgery, followed by observation at a Boston hospital.

McAvoy’s absence will be felt in Thursday’s championship game against Canada, as the US blue line is now weakened. Coach Mike Sullivan expressed his disappointment and support for McAvoy, stating that he’s a great kid and terrific hockey player. The Canadian team now has top defenseman Cale Makar back in the lineup.

The US is also facing uncertainty with the NHL’s roster rules for the tournament. Canucks captain Quinn Hughes was initially selected to replace an injured teammate but will only travel if there’s a real chance of playing. Hughes practiced in Vancouver on Tuesday, and it remains unclear if he’ll join the team. In his absence, Ottawa Senators’ Jake Sanderson is expected to remain in the lineup.

The US blue line’s injury issues have provided pause for Hughes ahead of a long journey. McAvoy will be sidelined on a week-to-week basis until the area heals without any long-term concerns for his health.
