OpenAI, the company behind AI chatbot ChatGPT, announced that it has discovered and banned accounts linked to an Iranian influence operation known as Storm-2035. The group used ChatGPT to generate content focused on various topics, including the US presidential campaign, Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Latinx rights, Venezuelan politics, Scottish independence, and even fashion and beauty content.
The generated content aimed to appear more authentic by creating a following, but it failed to achieve meaningful audience engagement. According to OpenAI, most social media posts received few or no likes, shares, or comments, and web articles were not shared across social media platforms.
Despite the lack of success, OpenAI takes seriously any efforts to use its services in foreign influence operations. The company’s statement emphasized that it will continue to monitor and take action against such attempts to manipulate public opinion.
