OpenAI’s secretive Project Strawberry is expected to become ChatGPT5, with insiders suggesting it could launch as early as this Fall (September or October). The new AI will reportedly excel in math and programming, surpassing any chatbot seen so far. Previous reports hinted that Project Strawberry would focus on “deep research,” allowing the AI to perform follow-up research without human intervention.
The improved math capabilities are welcome news, given ChatGPT’s struggles with simple math problems in the past. The reason for these mistakes was the lack of mathematical information in its training data, which Project Strawberry aims to address.
Beyond math, Project Strawberry is expected to demonstrate advanced thinking abilities, capable of solving complex puzzles like the New York Times Connections. This is a significant improvement from ChatGPT’s current limitations.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sparked rumors about Project Strawberry with an enigmatic tweet featuring strawberries on August 7. Since then, there have been reports that OpenAI demonstrated a version of Project Strawberry to national security officials.
While it’s unclear whether Project Strawberry will be part of ChatGPT5 or released separately, insiders suggest that the new AI could produce higher-quality data, which could be used to create training data for OpenAI’s next LLM. This would help reduce hallucinations (factual errors) in future models.
