General Motors (GM) has confirmed production of the next-gen Chevy Bolt is on track to begin by the end of the year, with another affordable electric vehicle (EV) also in development. The new EV will be built at GM’s Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas and is expected to feature significant improvements over its predecessor.
Production of the 2027 Chevy Bolt EV has already started, with GM planning to add the gas-powered Equinox to the mix in mid-2027. The next-gen Bolt EV will be part of a “family of Bolts,” including an even lower-priced version, which is expected to start slightly higher than the outgoing $28,785 MSRP.
GM’s CEO, Mary Barra, promises that the new Bolt will offer an “even better driving, charging, and ownership experience.” The vehicle will also be powered by LFP batteries, enabling GM to offer it at lower prices. This move aims to close the gap with Tesla in the US EV market.
The company’s investment of $4 billion over the next two years is designed to increase US production of both gas and electric vehicles as it looks to overcome Trump’s auto tariffs. With the Equinox EV already proving popular, GM is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for affordable EVs.
GM plans to offer an extensive range of electric vehicles, including entry-level models like the Bolt and Equinox, midsize options like the Blazer EV, pickups like the Silverado EV, and luxury models like the Escalade IQ. The company has sold over 62,000 EVS in the US through May, with Q2 sales expected to be interesting given May’s strong performance.
