Chi-Chi’s Revival: Beloved Chain to Reopen After 20-Year Hiatus

After a 20-year absence, popular Mexican restaurant chain Chi-Chi’s is set to make its comeback. The first new location is slated to open in Minnesota in 2025, with plans to expand to other areas nationwide. Michael McDermott, son of co-founder Marno McDermott, will oversee the revival and aims to recreate the original feel with a modern twist.

The chain’s heyday was marked by over 200 locations across the US, including Upstate New York. However, it struggled with ownership changes and faced a major setback in 2003 when a hepatitis A outbreak at a Pennsylvania location led to 660 illnesses and four deaths. The brand has since been revived internationally and remains on packaged salsas, tortilla chips, and seasonings.

McDermott, who has experience with other restaurant brands, believes there’s an opportunity to bring back the Chi-Chi’s name in a way that appeals to today’s consumers. He plans to update the dining experience while maintaining the same great taste and Mexican flavor. No new locations have been announced for New York state at this time.
