Chi-Chi’s, the beloved Mexican chain that filed for bankruptcy in 2003, is making a comeback. Michael McDermott, son of founder Marno McDermott, has struck an agreement with Hormel Foods to open new locations starting next year.
The restaurants will be updated versions of the classic Chi-Chi’s, reflecting the brand’s strong legacy and spirit. According to Hormel, there is a strong opportunity to revive the brand in a way that resonates with today’s consumers.
Chi-Chi’s was founded in 1975 by Marno McDermott and Max McGee, and it grew rapidly in the 1990s before filing for bankruptcy due to ownership changes and increasing competition. The chain’s reputation was further marred by a hepatitis A outbreak in one of its restaurants in Pennsylvania, which killed four people and sickened 660.
The company’s last location closed in 2004. With Hormel’s backing, Chi-Chi’s plans to bring back the brand, promising an exciting relaunch for fans of the classic Mexican restaurant chain.
