Jeff Blashill is the new coach of the Chicago Blackhawks, succeeding Anders Sorenson who was promoted after Luke Richardson’s early season firing. The veteran coach takes over at a crucial stage in the team’s rebuilding process. Blashill, 51, brings significant experience to the role, having previously coached the Detroit Red Wings from 2015 to 2022 and leading them through a rebuilding phase.
Blashill has also worked in developmental leagues, including the NCAA, USHL, and AHL, under Jon Cooper’s guidance. His coaching background provides an asset for a team looking to develop young players. General manager Kyle Davidson praised Blashill, saying he is “incredibly smart” and has shown ability to balance development with overall team success.
The Blackhawks have been rebuilding since 2021, but lack experience in this area. With the addition of Blashill, they aim to bring a new voice and developmental background to the role. The team has focused on growing through the NHL draft, including selecting phenom Connor Bedard first overall in 2023.
