Chicago Fire Unveils $650 Million Stadium Plans in South Loop

Chicago Fire has unveiled plans for a brand new stadium located on Roosevelt Road and the Chicago River. The 78, which is currently mostly vacant, will serve as the team’s new home with a capacity of 22,000. Construction is expected to begin this fall, with completion scheduled for 2028.

The stadium project will be privately funded by team owner Joe Mansueto at $650 million. It will also be part of a mixed-use district featuring dining, shopping, and housing options. Residents and local business owners welcome the development, seeing it as an opportunity to revitalize the area.

The site has previously been considered for other projects, including a new White Sox stadium and Amazon headquarters. However, Chicago Fire ownership says they are confident in their vision for The 78, which will serve as a hub for sports and entertainment in the city.

Mayor Brandon Johnson supports the project, calling it a “major development opportunity” that aligns with his administration’s goals of growth and expansion for the city’s sports teams. The stadium is expected to benefit from its location on the riverfront, attracting tourists and new businesses to the area.

The project still requires City Council approval, but Mansueto has pledged to ensure public use and public benefit. Related Midwest, a developer involved in the project, says they remain open to exploring options with the White Sox about sharing the site.
